Steamed Hakurei Turnip

Hakurei turnips are very low in calories & carbs but are satisfying!

Steamed veggies this time of year are the BEST! Why?

-No oven required

-Minimal prep & dishes

-Veggies are at their prime for flavour

-Steaming preserves more nutrients than other cooking methods

-It’s fast!

And steamed Hakurei turnips are one of my faves! These are also delicious raw -  they’re sweet & crisp but if you have digestive issues, I recommend keeping your raw veggie intake to a minimum. Plus these become buttery & even sweeter when cooked!

Also known as Japanese turnips, this veggie is part of the brassica family. Why does this matter? Brassicas support our liver & detoxification in a BIG way. If you are struggling with PMS, symptoms of perimenopause/menopause, skin or digestive issues or weight gain, ensure to consume brassicas regularly!

Hakurei turnips get even sweeter & buttery when cooked!

Directions

  2. Dice the turnip (no need to peel!) and place in the steamer basket.

  3. Cover & steam until just tender (overcooked turnip have less flavour).

  4. Optional: blanch the greens in the boiling water, chop & toss with the cooked turnip.

  5. Top with olive oil or butter while hot, salt & fresh herbs.

Notes

How to Serve- Top with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, fresh herbs or butter while hot. These are so tasty you don’t need much - just a bit to enhance their flavour.
